Surreal Culinary Experience At The Epic Bush Chef Cook Competition

I had the unique opportunity of attending the Bush Chef competition in Saint Croix, representing my business, Food Companion. This annual competition serves as a reminder of the natural way of cooking and surviving, which many of us have strayed away from. The event is hosted by Sejah Farm, a 20+ acre local family farm on Saint Croix featuring livestock and produce.

Food Companion’s vision is local food at your fingertips.

My business goals aligned with the competition. Food Companion currently offers private chef services for private villas and yachts in the Virgin Islands. Food Companion focuses on sourcing from local farmers, fishermen, and producers. We strive to provide an authentic and high-quality dining experience for our guests. The Bush/Chef Cook Competition provides an excellent opportunity for my business to work with other farmers and chefs in the Virgin Islands.

St. Croix has a rich culture and cuisine.

Every time I visit St. Croix, I discover new delicious food to try and enjoy. St. Croix has diverse cuisine options, from traditional Virgin Island dishes to Puerto Rican, Italian, American, and cuisine you would never think of. I enjoyed seeing the various representations of Saint Croix’s unique dining scene at the competition. Every chef had a unique take on what it meant to bring traditional flavors to life.

USVI agriculture and chefs help combat food insecurity in the Virgin Islands.

The US Virgin Islands imports over 90% of its food, leaving the territory’s basic needs at risk for sudden interruptions. The more we can encourage local agriculture, the natural way of living, and keeping local recipes alive, the only way to ensure that the Virgin Islands continues to survive. The Virgin Islands is nothing without its people, history, and culture. I’m happy for events like the competition to help revive that awareness and the importance of stewarding the earth.
