Stocks Crashing? Invest in Travel

Travel is often viewed as a luxury—and it is, to an extent. Pricing has never been more apparent than now, with looming tariffs and a potential recession. Many Americans who delayed life’s pleasures in favor of stock investing now wonder if they’ll have enough to retire, given the market’s volatility. As the markets crash, I can’t help but wonder if risk-averse retirement investors wish they had taken risks in other aspects of their lives instead—like travel.

Travel Within Your Budget

I always scoff at people who only fantasize about taking vacations. They often fit the profile of being overworked and desperate yet willing to delay their joy for some far-off day that might never come. I understand that some genuinely cannot afford to travel to their dream destination—this is not the same thing. The reason I scoff at the daydreamers is that they fail to recognize their ability to be tourists in their own or nearby communities. There’s a slim chance we’ve completely unearthed everything there is to do in our neighborhoods, and I always recommend starting there first.

There Is Always a Return on Travel Experiences

Travel is an investment, not just an expense. I view it as a way to invest in my cultural competency and global awareness. The reward I gain from travel is the many ways it connects me to both my local community and people across the world. I find it beautiful when a stranger and I discover similarities in our varied experiences across the globe. In those moments, conversations and ideas flow, as I form new pathways of connection with someone I’d never have imagined bonding with.

Travel Creates New Modes of Earning a Living

Traveling to survive is nothing new. Since the beginning of time, people have left their homes in search of better, safer, and more sustainable places to live. Today, travel is typically for work or pleasure, but even now, it’s still a means to find a new life when the old one no longer fits. Whatever your reason for traveling, just know: there’s always an option to make a living wherever you are.
